Every pack of paper shows a number followed by “GSM”. It stands for grams per square metre — the weight of one sheet if it were a full square metre. The higher the number, the thicker and stiffer the paper. Picking the right weight is the easiest way to make your printing look more professional.
The quick chart
- 70 GSM — light, everyday copy paper. Ideal for drafts, notes, forms and bulk office printing. Cheapest per sheet.
- 80 GSM — the standard for documents, assignments and CVs. Slightly thicker, so less ink shows through from the other side.
- 100 GSM — a premium writing and printing paper. Great for reports, double-sided printing, letters and handouts that should feel substantial.
- 160 GSM — light card. Use it for menus, flyers, covers for project files and simple greeting cards.
- 230–310 GSM — art board. Stiff enough for certificates, invitations, place cards, business cards and craft models.
White or off-white?
Bright white gives crisp contrast for charts and colour printing. Off-white (sometimes called ivory or cream) is softer on the eyes, which is why it is popular for long reading documents, wedding stationery, journals and sketching. Off-white also hides small smudges better.
Check your printer before buying thick sheets
Most home and office printers handle 70–100 GSM in the normal tray without any trouble. For 160 GSM and above, look up the “maximum paper weight” in your printer's manual. Many printers have a rear or manual feed slot for thick card — use that, one sheet at a time, and choose the “thick paper” or “card stock” setting in the print dialog.
Storing paper in a humid climate
Paper absorbs moisture from the air, which makes sheets curl and jam. Keep packs closed and flat, away from windows and bathrooms, and only take out what you need. If a sheet has curled, place it under a heavy book overnight.
Which pack should I pick?
For school and office documents, 70 or 80 GSM white is the safe choice. For assignments you want to stand out, try 100 GSM. For certificates, cards and invitations, go for 230–310 GSM art board, and for DIY labels choose glossy sticker paper.
