Flash cards are more than a memory drill. Used as games, they teach new words, sorting, counting and listening β without a screen.
Seven games to try
- Name it: show a card; your child says the word. Switch languages for a challenge.
- Find it: lay out five cards and ask, βWhere's the banana?β
- Odd one out: put three fruits and one vehicle together β which doesn't belong?
- Memory match: place cards face down and find pairs (use two packs or draw a matching card).
- Treasure hunt: hide cards around the room and call them out one by one.
- Sound it out: with Sinhala letter cards, say the sound and think of words that start with it.
- Tell a story: pick three random cards and make up a story that uses all three.
Keep it short. Five to ten minutes is plenty for young children. End while they're still having fun so they ask to play again.
Add drawing and writing
After a flash card game, ask your child to draw their favourite card in a colouring book, or write the word on an LCD writing tablet β it wipes clean with one button, so there's no paper waste and no fear of mistakes.
