Children in Sri Lanka often grow up hearing two or three languages. Reading at home in each of them β even for a few minutes a day β builds vocabulary, listening skills and confidence before and during school.
Start with stories, not drills
Read a short story book together every day. Point to the pictures, ask βWhat do you think happens next?β and let your child turn the pages. Moral story books are a lovely way to talk about kindness, honesty and sharing.
A simple weekly routine
- Daily: one story at bedtime β rotate between Sinhala, Tamil and English books.
- 3 times a week: 10 minutes with an alphabet book. Say the letter, the sound and a word that starts with it.
- Weekends: a workbook or practice copybook page for tracing and writing letters.
Make writing practice fun
Practice copybooks guide little hands with dotted letters. Keep sessions short (5β10 minutes), praise effort rather than neatness, and stop before your child gets tired.
Choosing books by age
- 2β4 years: picture-rich ABC and animal books; point and name.
- 4β6 years: alphabet books, short stories, tracing workbooks.
- 6β8 years: longer story books they can start reading on their own.
Story book packs are great value for families with more than one child, or as gifts for pre-schools and Sunday schools.
